This talk highlights our migratory species and what YOU can do to create a cleaner environment with everyday activities. Packing smart can mean less disposable plastics and a cleaner environment.

What is a Mermaid’s Purse?

Mermaid purses are egg cases found along the shores in the lower bay and along the Atlantic coast. They wash ashore from ray, skate, and shark species. I have egg casings from the clearnose skate, our most common skate found in the lower bay. Kids can see and touch the Mermaid purses and learn how baby skates are born and grow.

Many migratory species come to the Chesapeake Bay to lay eggs and raise young but they are impacted by environmental changes cause by pollution and loss of habitat. Let’s discuss what we can do to change our daily routine to make it better for our world.

What’s Inside the Chesapeake Mermaid’s Purse?

My purse is much, much bigger but still reflects it’s ray/skate origins in design. And packed inside are all the things I need for an environmentally friendly day. I have reusable cups and bowls, snack bags and storage bags, utensils, bamboo straws, a reusable drinking bottle, extra shopping bags, and more! I explain what each item is and how it saves on disposable products found in day to day life. Kids can touch the different items and ask questions about options available.

You Can Pack for a Better Future

Your purse doesn’t have to look like mine to be effective. Take a look at your daily routine and find alternatives that best fit your lifestyle. Things to consider are space, weight, and number of items. You’re more likely to use your items if they are lightweight, easy to carry, and easily found in your bag or person. Look for items that are collapsible, can be added to your keychain or belt, or have more than one usage or option, like a multitool.

It’s ok if you forget your bag once in a while. Everyone forgets sometimes. It’s not about being perfect but about trying to be better. We all have ways we can improve and grow and learn. Habits can take a while to change but you can start today. Another way you can help is to join a community cleanup. Check out our calendar for cleanup events or visit Project Clean Stream for more.
