reviews

learning nature

“I had no idea there were so many different creatures living in the Chesapeake Bay area. This book is a fun and educational activity, suitable for people of all ages.” – Pamela Sabatiuk, Laurel, Maryland

“The Chesapeake Mermaid has delivered yet another quality book about our own Chesapeake Bay. This comprehensive list of the native flora and fauna of the Bay is beautifully illustrated and invites the readers to participate as they read and learn about them. I hope that you enjoy sharing this book with anyone that enjoys coloring and learning about nature.” – Betsy Turner, Teacher, Baltimore County, Maryland

“What a wonderfully, well done book. The artwork and information on the Chesapeake watershed is beautifully done. I’ll be passing this on to my sister, who is an ASL interpreter and regularly volunteers at a camp for the hearing/vision impaired.” – Chris Lloyd, Eastern Shore

CENTURY ISLAND

“…after only a few pages I noticed I was learning something new against a backdrop of a children’s tale, which is exciting…” – Ed Boyle, Facebook review

“This story descibes teamwork, empathy, change of heart, and selflessness beautifully. Century Island does a fantastic job of telling an exciting story while teaching conservation, recycling, and reusing in age appropriate ways.” – Maren Butz Fouts, Facebook review

the giants of the bay

“…Now here’s the part where I personally fell in love with the book…it started a real conversation with my little girl about conservation and the impacts we make on our environment…” – Alan Battista, Facebook review

“Beautiful book with a wonderful message! …Angela and The Chesapeake Mermaid are dedicated to educating the young and young at heart through their extensive volunteer work and writing.” – Barbara Cornwell, Facebook review

the last bivalvian

“This is such a tender book! My four year old loves it and knows and explains the importance of oysters and the importance of being good stewards of the water. Thank you so much for this, and for the Chesapeake Mermaid!” – Laura A. B. Friess, Facebook review

“Beautiful to see, and lots to learn! This sweet book with its rich, captivating illustrations by Angela Rose Mitchell teaches us about a much overlooked, but highly important sea resident. Bivalves keep our waters clean and healthy, and counteracts the damage done to our oceans and waterways caused by careless practices. Although the recommended reading age is 8 and up, the wording is never oversimplified for younger readers. Well done, Chesapeake Mermaid, I look forward to your next publication!” – DuckAru, Amazon review

“The first thing that will strike you about this book is how AMAZING the artwork is on every page. There are so many details in so many layers and the characters are so animated and expressive. The second thing is that behind the fantasy setting there is so much real science and history packed into every paragraph. I enjoy explaining to my sons that, “These are things that actually happened.” There actually are dredgers, an unsustainable fishing technique that harms underwater environments and reduces biodiversity. We loved learning about the Exmore crater in the Chesapeake Bay, with twice the salt levels of the oceans. The way the book adds a layer of the fantastic over the science for which it advocates is best illustrated in the two maps of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed prefacing the book, one in fantasy-storybook style and the other a modern view with the oyster sanctuaries. It was fun to explore the maps and explain to my boys how this network of waterways is all around us and in the parks we regularly explore. There is a lot of world-building packed into this book, and I look forward to future additions that will further explore the many stories begging to be told here.” – Ryan Somma, Facebook review

“Fun book, great price! The storyline, information, and illustrations make this a must for any little one’s library. Also, pretty awesome that you can follow the Chesapeake Mermaid online and even attend some of her events if you are local!” – Margaret, Amazon review

Chesapeake Mermaid Launches New Coloring Book Celebrating Local Wildlife in Sign Language

The Chesapeake Mermaid, talented performer and environmentalist, has just released an exciting new coloring book that celebrates local wildlife and habitats while also promoting sign language education. The coloring book Learning Nature features over 100 beautiful illustrations of animals and plants that can be found in the Chesapeake Bay region, including crabs, oysters, and striped bass, each accompanied by their name using finger spelling. Artwork has been done by award winning artist Angela Mitchell who illustrated The Last Bivalvian, The Giants of the Bay, and Century Island also by The Chesapeake Mermaid. The designs are printed on high-quality paper, making them perfect for coloring with pencils, markers, or watercolors.

Chesapeake Mermaid Takes On Lost Wildlife and Human History in New Storybook

Century Island is the third in a series of environmental tales from the Chesapeake Mermaid and illustrator Angela R. Mitchell. The latest science fantasy is a journey into understanding habitat loss, dead zones, and our disappearing islands inspired by real challenges in the Chesapeake Bay. “Each book has a program that goes along with it,” said Mitchell, emmy nominated artist and animal rescue volunteer, “When it comes to our environmental impact, we have historically focused on single use products and how very long they can last in our world. With Century Island, we asked a new question – what about the things we WANT to last? What about pieces of our history being lost in places that aren’t protected? We talk about lost habitats and wildlife but we take a look at human artifacts as well and the people who don’t want to be forgotten.”

Chesapeake Mermaid Releases 2nd Storybook about Environmental Challenges

The Chesapeake Mermaid, local volunteer and children’s edutainer, is releasing a second children’s picture book explaining some of the biggest challenges facing the environment and sparking hope for the future. The Giants of the Bay is the second storybook for the Chesapeake Mermaid and illustrator Angela R. Mitchell, and was inspired by many small efforts being done to reverse changes made during the bay’s history. In the story, many real challenges are put forth by the giant characters. “Small things matter. There are people making positive efforts every day that go unrecognized because they aren’t part of some big group,” …
